Worker’s Cottage Renovation, Comfortable & Spacious
Taringa, Queensland, Australia
The Taringa house, originally a four-room worker’s cottage is located along a traditional street lined with character housing in an inner west suburb of Brisbane.
Designed by Loucas Zahos Architects, this project was driven by the desire to accommodate the majority of family activity within the new addition and from this has generated two juxtaposed but contrasting building forms.
The old style cottage retains much of its original detail and functions as an entrance, which includes a guest bedroom, bathroom and overflow living space. The new contemporary addition is the core of everyday living and contains the kitchen, main living area, dining and bedrooms.
The double height glazed living area central to the new addition opens out to a beautiful Jacaranda tree and sub-tropical vegetation of the backyard, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. This glazing to the main living space is steel framed, in contrast to the timber frame applied in the bedrooms. Altair Louvre Windows with low profile handles span between the vertical structural mullion uninterrupted, optimising the extent of transparency and cross ventilation.
As a result, this newly transformed home pleasantly fulfils the owners requests, capturing fresh breezes and an abundant amount of natural light to maintain a comfortable, spacious environment for the whole family to enjoy all year round.
